Sunnymead Middle School Unveils Modernized Campus for 21st-Century Learning
In November, Tilden-Coil Constructors proudly joined the Moreno Valley Unified School District (MVUSD) to celebrate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly modernized Sunnymead Middle School. This transformative project, which began in May 2022 and concluded in July 2024, delivers a 9,600-square-foot state-of-the-art multipurpose building and a vibrant visual and performing arts (VAPA) center, setting the stage for 21st-century learning.
The modernization, designed by PJHM Architects, revitalized approximately 40,100 square feet of instructional and student support spaces originally constructed in the late 1980s. The updates align with MVUSD’s new educational model, which emphasizes 360-degree classroom pedagogy and integrates the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) curriculum.
Highlights of the project include:
- Science and Arts Revitalization: The original science and arts building has been reimagined to support STEAM education with modern facilities designed for collaborative and innovative learning.
- VAPA Center: The former multipurpose and music classroom building now serves as a dynamic space for Baile folklorico, dance, drama, and ASB programs. Indoor and outdoor classroom connections promote cross-disciplinary collaboration.
- Multipurpose and Food Service Complex: A new 10,750-square-foot multipurpose building, 6,800-square-foot lunch shelter, and 3,600-square-foot food service building create a fresh school identity and a welcoming student entry promenade. The multipurpose room features advanced acoustics, motorized stage lighting, theatrical systems, and an operable sliding glazed wall that connects indoor and outdoor spaces for versatile use.
Sustainability was a key focus of the project. The new construction incorporates wood framing and heavy timber to reduce embodied carbon while showcasing these natural materials. Existing on-site solar shade structures nearly achieve net-zero energy, and future-ready infrastructure is in place for additional solar panels and the transition to an all-electric food service facility.
This modernization marks a new era for Sunnymead Middle School, providing spaces where students can dream, create, and thrive. Tilden-Coil Constructors extends heartfelt thanks to MVUSD and PJHM Architects for their partnership and dedication to bringing this vision to life.
Together, we are shaping brighter futures for students and creating environments that inspire learning and growth.
