On April 8, 2019, Cerritos Community College dedicated the Health & Wellness Complex with a celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony and performances by the Bollywood Dance Group, the Cerritos Cheerleaders, and the African Dance Group. Those in attendance included, the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and members of the Cerritos community. Dr. Jose Fierro, President of Cerritos College, said, “It is truly an honor for me to dedicate this new facility that will help improve the health and wellness of our students and campus community.”
The construction of the HWC has been split into 2 phases to allow for the continued use of the existing Physical Education building and avoid the need to temporarily relocate or suspend current college programs. Additionally, special logistics planning was taken into consideration due to the high pedestrian traffic around the construction site. With student safety being the primary concern, gate systems and protocol for contractors were developed early on.
Phase 1 is complete and consisted of Physical Education, Weight Room, Adapted PE, Physical Therapy, Dance, and Hall of Fame programs. Phase 2 consists of Student Health Services with clinical, counseling, and administrative spaces and a second building for Varsity Team Rooms and is scheduled to open in 2020. HPEDA (Health, Physical Education, Dance and Athletics) Interim Dean, Russ May, stated, “Our goal here with this as we spoke in our division meeting, is that we can use this building is to infuse health and wellness into the fabric of every discipline on this campus.”
