Overview
The project included the conversion of a vacant three-story hospital built in 1929 into two co-located facilities, the ELA Star High School Academy (70,000 sf) and the ELA Star East (adult) Learning Center (30,000 sf). A new 2-story gymnasium building (15,500 sf) was also constructed on the site.
Located on 5 acres in a densely populated urban area, creative design strategies were used by the architect to satisfy multi-generational students, house a wide variety of educational programs in one renovated building, accommodate new technology, offer flexible spaces, and provide the security needed to keep the adult learning center open 24-hours, year-round.
