Overview
The Wheelock Gymnasium project was a complete renovation and seismic retrofit of the Riverside City College campus' historic gymnasium built in 1928. Tilden-Coil gutted the entire interior, added seismic brace frames and structural steel supports that tied into the existing buildings' structural supports. We then removed all the old interior walls and finishes, including the main gym basketball floor and installed all new plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems in the existing building. The floor layout was revised, and new spaces were created for men's/women's team room as well as visitor locker rooms (both men/women).
The main gym floor was replaced with a new gym floor including all new gym equipment and scoreboards. In addition to these components, the project included an addition to the building, which added 2 elevator towers on the West elevation for ADA access into the building and a third poured in place elevator tower on the East elevation for access on to the upper (main) portion of campus. Site improvements included several retaining wall stair and ramp systems to tie in the existing parking lot and create a compliant path of travel into and around the building.
